Today, nearly every gallon of gasoline in the U.S. contains a minimum of 10 percent ethanol derived from corn. Corn ethanol is a homegrown, renewable, clean-burning motor fuel that lowers the price consumers pay at the pump and provides an important economic boost to farmers and rural communities.
U.S. corn farmers believe so strongly in the case for higher blends of ethanol, because of corn ethanol’s ability to improve engine performance and reduce environmental impacts, all at a lower cost to consumers. Corn farmers work tirelessly to ensure consumers have a future choice at the fuel pump that delivers all the benefits possible through fuels blended with higher volumes of ethanol.
Whether it’s backing the market access provided by the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) or expanding the marketplace with higher blends of ethanol, like E15, the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) is working for America’s corn farmers to increase ethanol use.
Each year, roughly 30 percent of field corn goes into fuel ethanol. Ethanol is the second-largest customer for U.S. corn. Corn ethanol is uniquely positioned to play a larger role in the future of transportation fuels.
The ethanol industry has had a substantial impact on the economic vitality of rural communities, especially in America’s heartland, where the majority of the nation’s corn ethanol plants are located. Short transportation distances and local investment have led to most ethanol facilities being centrally located in the United States, providing more economic independence and energy security to our country while supporting local jobs.
Ethanol production is a domestic energy industry, creating jobs and economic vitality all across America—especially in rural areas of the nation.
-
In 2019, the U.S. ethanol industry helped support nearly 349,000 direct and indirect jobs.
-
Ethanol contributed more than $43 billion to the Gross Domestic Product and added $23.3 billion to household income.
-
This generated more than $10 billion in tax revenue for federal, state and local governments.

The Renewable Fuel Standard...
-
Has spurred economic growth for farmers and rural communities
-
Provides a dependable structure that assists in stabilizing markets and promoting new technological advancements in the biofuels industry
-
Is NOT a “mandate.”
-
The standards set by the EPA simply allows more American-made products to be part of America’s fuel supply.
-
We should be strengthening our commitment to renewable fuels, not backing down.
-
RFS Overview
For more than 20 years, the National Corn Growers has worked side by side with farmers, industry, and government to build the ethanol industry from the ground up. Corn farmers across the country and the ethanol industry have helped America move one step closer to energy independence. Our industry is also a major force in the revitalization of rural America by helping create green jobs and stimulating economic activity in rural communities.
Corn farmers and the ethanol industry play a significant role in promoting both energy independence and a stable, prosperous U. S. economy. All this has been possible due in large part to the passage of the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) in 2005 and expansion in 2007. The RFS has been a remarkable success and has helped to promote cleaner, greener fuels while also helping America become more energy independent. We must protect the integrity of the RFS.
Year-Round E15
The Environmental Protection Agency has issued a proposed rule that has the potential to make year-round E15 a reality this year.
It’s time to remove the outdated barrier to year-round sales of E15. Farmers benefit from increasing sales of higher blends of ethanol through growing demand for corn, while consumers benefit from lower fuel prices and lower emissions. Retailers want to offer this fuel. Farmers need to help ensure obstacles to year-round E15 sales are removed.
Currently, the proposed rule for E15 is paired with a complex proposal to change rules for Renewable Identification Numbers (RINs), the credits that demonstrate compliance with the RFS. An effective RIN market helps to drive more ethanol blending, but some provisions in EPA’s proposal could have the opposite effect. While EPA wants to move the E15 and RIN market rules together, we need EPA to ensure the RIN market proposal is fair to those who are blending more biofuels and not tilted in favor of refiners who choose not to blend.
Other Resources
To unlock improved performance in future auto engines, automakers will require consumer access to higher octane fuels at retail gas stations. Corn farmers, just like all Americans, want access to the lowest cost, most efficient, environmentally friendly, and safe motor fuels available. Corn ethanol is uniquely positioned as it is the only option that checks all of these boxes today. Ethanol is a commercially available, high-octane, low-carbon, affordable source of octane that stands ready to reliably supply the U.S. motor fuel market with a homegrown fuel. Studies have shown that in order to optimize the performance of future engines, a high-octane fuel could utilize between 20%-40% ethanol compared to the 10%-15% blends standard across the U.S. today. The move to higher octane fuels will not occur overnight, but it is NCGA’s stance that we must move quickly to plant the seeds for future ethanol demand that will positively impact farmers for decades to come.
