NCGA Board Elects Wesley Spurlock as Next Farmer to Help Lead Organization

The National Corn Growers Association’s Corn Board has elected Wesley Spurlock of Texas to become the organization's first vice president for the next fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1.

“I feel honored that my colleagues on the board chose to place their trust in my ability and dedication to leading our association forward as we work to create greater opportunities for corn growers across the country,” said Spurlock. “Farmers face a multitude of challenges right now, but it is of the utmost importance that we work proactively to build demand at the same time. From a proliferation of regulations to threats to the Renewable Fuel Standard to misinformation about our industry that permeates public perception, we have much work to do. I look forward to working with our grower leadership over the coming years to find innovative, impactful ways to grow the demand for our growing crop.”

Spurlock farms 9,600 acres of irrigated corn, cotton, wheat and grain sorghum in the upper Texas panhandle, where he also runs a harvesting and spray company.

On the national level, Spurlock serves chairman of NCGA’s Association Relations Committee, as co-chair of the 2016 Commodity Classic Joint Venture Committee and as the association’s representation on the BNSF Railway Ag Business Council. Previously, he chaired NCGA’s Finance Committee and served as the Corn Board liaison to the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association.  He has also served on NCGA’s Production Stewardship Action Team, its Mycotoxin Task Force and as board liaison to the National Chicken Council.

“A large part of NCGA’s success can be attributed to the quality of farmers who have stepped forward to lead the organization, and we strongly believe that Wesley will continue this fine tradition,” said NCGA President Chip Bowling. “Our Corn Board appreciates the energy he brings to our work and the thoughtful insights he contributes to our discussions. Wesley continually demonstrates his dedication to farmers and his willingness to work tirelessly on their behalf.”

On Oct. 1, Bowling, of Maryland, becomes chairman and the current first vice president, Rob Elliott of Illinois, becomes NCGA president. In October 2016, Elliott becomes chairman and Spurlock becomes president.
