Updated Media Advisory
WHAT:
The National Corn Growers Association (NCGA), Midwest Area River Coalition (MARC 2000) and the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America (UBC) “Pass WRDA Now” press conference
WHEN:

May 2, 2006
2 p.m.

WHERE:

Strom Thurmond Room
Room S-238
U.S. Capitol
Washington, D.C.

WHY:
The Water Resources Development Act of 2005 (WRDA) includes congressional authorization for lock modernization on the Upper Mississippi and Illinois Rivers. This aging navigation system was designed to handle a 2 billion bushel crop, a far cry from today’s corn production of an 11 billion bushel crops. Failure to pass WRDA this year will adversely impact consumers, the economy, and the agriculture industry’s ability to meet the demands of a growing world population.

Dale Roth, United Brotherhood of Carpenters
Tim Richardson, American Land Conservancy
