WASHINGTON (March
13, 2003) — In a statement issued today, National Corn Growers
Association (NCGA) President Fred Yoder reiterated NCGA policy against
opening the farm bill. According to Yoder, NCGA is concerned with the
House Budget Committee’s decision that significant spending be
cut from agriculture, including farm bill programs.
“NCGA’s
policy is clear that the farm bill should not be opened, and we oppose
efforts to do so,” said Yoder. “However, corn growers recognize
the nation is facing budget deficits, war, continued terror threats,
and a softening economy and that fiscal restraint may be needed.”
“NCGA will
continue to work through the budget process to ensure there are adequate
funds to secure the viability of the farm safety net and preserve the
integrity of the farm bill,” Yoder concluded.
The Senate Budget Committee is expected to complete action on its budget
resolution this week.
