NCGA, U.S. Corn Coalition Pleased by Canadian Final Ruling (4-19-06)
Radio

The National Corn Growers Association (NCGA), as part of the U.S. Corn Coalition, today applauded the final ruling by the Canadian International Trade Tribunal (CITT) determining Canadian corn producers are not adversely affected by imports of unprocessed U.S. corn. The decision comes in response to allegations that U.S. dumping and subsidizing of grain corn harms Canadian producers.

NCGA President Gerald Tumbleson said the decision yesterday upholds the integrity of international trade law and ensures Canada will have enough corn to satisfy its domestic needs. It further noted the exemplary efforts of the U.S. government, in particular the U.S. Trade Representative's Office, in urging the Canadian government to uphold its international obligations in this case.

“We are extremely pleased with the CITT’s ruling,” said Tumbleson. “NCGA and the U.S. Corn Coalition knew that U.S. corn has not been the cause of Canadian corn growers’ economic or financial troubles.”

The CITT ruling is effective immediately and is in response to a determination in March by the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA), which recommended a duty of $1.47 per bushel on U.S. corn be imposed for up to five years. The CITT will give its reasons for the ruling on May 3.

The U.S. Corn Coalition includes the American Farm Bureau Federation, Corn Refiners Association, NCGA and U.S. Grains Council.
