McCauley Stresses Safety
Net Need in 2007 Farm Bill at NAFB Panel (11-14-05)
National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) First Vice President Ken McCauley
emphasized the importance of an adequate safety net in place for the upcoming
farm bill during a panel discussion Friday at the National Association
Farm Broadcasters NAFB National Convention in Kansas City, Mo., last week.
“We support the 2002 farm bill and our members are basically happy
with it,” said McCauley, noting that some small changes may have
to be made. “Eventually we’ll end up with the right thing
for our growers.
“All of our members agree that a safety net is important and must
remain in tact. You’ve heard that so far and you’ll continue
to hear that.”
McCauley said that while NCGA is committed to keeping markets open and
expanding rural development, the organization does not lose sight of
the importance of exports.
“Our goal at NCGA is to promote market-oriented solutions that
stimulate economic development and ensure an adequate safety net,” McCauley
said. “Even though we’re emphasizing rural development and
marker oriented solutions, that doesn’t mean we’re not concerned
about exports. Exports are important. Everyone isn’t involved in
value-added (production), and we recognize that. And everyone knows that
a little export news goes a long way."
