NCGA
Weed Resistance Management Learning Center First Step in Learning
Best Practices (6-1-05)
Education in best practices
for weed management is just a mouse click away. The National Corn
Growers Association (NCGA) in conjunction with university weed scientists
and leading developers of agricultural crop protection products,
has developed the Weed Resistance Management Learning Center (WRMLC),
an online education program to educate growers and ag industry professionals
on how to reduce the development of resistant weeds.
The program is accessible
at no charge at www.ncga.com. The self-paced interactive program
can be completed in about 45 minutes or in a series of online sessions.
Participants go through a series of simple “how-to”
lessons on steps they can take to manage against resistance. Each
audio/visual lesson contains interactive learning exercises. The
WRMLC is approved by the American Society of Agronomy for Certified
Crop Advisors to earn continuing education units.
Weed resistant management
topics include:
* Why herbicide resistance is a naturally occurring ability of weeds?
* What is integrated weed management and why is it important?
* How do you prevent weed resistance with integrated weed management?
* How do you scout for weed resistance?
* What steps do you take if you suspect weed resistance?
The WRMLC was produced
by NCGA with the support of industry partners including BASF, Bayer
CropScience, Dow AgroSciences, Monsanto and Syngenta. The WRMLC
is the second installment in NCGA’s grower education strategy,
following the release of the Insect Resistance Management Learning
Center in March 2004.
“Herbicide technology
is an important tool in a grower’s battle against weeds,”
said Nathan Danielson, NCGA Director of Biotechnology and Business
Development. “And good stewardship is essential to ensuring
this technology is available for farmers. This easy-to-use program
provides important education in best-practices for weed control
management.”
