NCGA leaders Set to Discuss EU Mission with Media (7-6-05)

The National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) and the U.S. Grains Council (USGC) will host a media call tomorrow at 2 p.m., Central Daylight Time, to discuss their 10-day European Union (EU) mission tomorrow.

NCGA President Leon Corzine, First Vice President Gerald Tumbleson, NCGA Biotech Working Group Chairman Darrin Ihnen and NCGA CEO Rick Tolman will participate on the call. Paul Williams, chairman of the USGC, and Ken Hobbie, president and CEO of the USGC, will join the NCGA representatives. The group visited Belgium, Great Britain, Spain and Switzerland from June 19 to June 29 to discuss global trends in biofuels and trade barriers to biotechnology with government officials, agribusiness representatives and growers.

The group discovered that EU governments are stifling trade for biotech corn, even though some growers and importers want the product. The issue is more of a political one and not a safety issue. The mission also realized that Europe is recognizing the need to turn to biofuels as an alternative energy source.

Media can access the call at 800-391-2548. The passcode is VJ326551.
