NCGA
Encourages Swift Senate Confirmation of Johanns as Agriculture Secretary
(01-06-05)
In a letter
Wednesday to Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Saxby Chambliss
(R-Ga.), the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) endorsed the
appointment of Nebraska Gov. Mike Johanns as secretary of agriculture.
NCGA encouraged the committee
to support confirmation by the full Senate.
“NCGA’s Corn
Board unanimously endorsed Gov. Johanns at its December meeting,”
said NCGA President Leon Corzine. “We feel that his strong
leadership and breadth of experience eminently qualify him to serve
as the nation’s next secretary of agriculture.”
In the letter, NCGA says
Johanns has demonstrated a genuine commitment to advancing U.S.
agriculture interests through work on incentives for value-added
agriculture and the creation of jobs in Nebraska’s rural areas.
From renewable fuels
to expanding trade opportunities, Johanns’ wealth of knowledge
and his understanding of the complex issues before the Department
of Agriculture will ensure continued progress on issues affecting
both consumers and U.S. producers, the letter noted.
