NCGA Members, Industry Experts Discuss Future of Maize Genome (3-16-04)

The National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) on March 15 announced the genetic structure of corn could be decoded several years ahead of schedule, thanks to the release of genome sequencing data by Monsanto Company, DuPont's Pioneer Hi-Bred International Inc. and Ceres Inc.

NCGA will oversee the release of the maize genome information to the public, and scientists in the public sector who wish to access sequencing data will be required to register through the NCGA.

Ohio Corn grower Gary Davis, chairman of NCGA's Research and Business Development Action Team; Nathan Danielson, NCGA manager of research and business development; and industry representatives spoke with Peter Shinn of the National Association of Farm Broadcasters and other reporters on March 15.
