New USDA Web Site Provides Information on Obesity Prevention, Nutrition
(12-30-04)
The U.S. Department
of Agriculture (USDA) recently launched www.nutrition.gov, a Web site
designed to offer consumers reliable nutrition, health and obesity
information. The National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) supports
such efforts to provide the public with dependable, science-based
information on healthy dietary practices.
“Health solutions begin with the availability
of reliable nutrition and physical activity information the public
can use to make good health choices and maintain a healthy weight,”
Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman said.
Nutrition.gov includes information from USDA, the
Department of Health and Human Services and other governmental agencies.
The site is the result of a 2003 recommendation by USDA’s National
Agricultural Research, Extension, Education, and Economics Advisory
Board to develop food- and exercise-based strategies for obesity prevention.
The Web site is maintained by a team of registered
dietitians and nutrition information specialists at USDA’s Food
and Nutrition Information Center. The site features recipes, interactive
tools, information on the food guide pyramid, dietary guidelines for
Americans, dietary supplements, fitness and how to keep food safe.
