Corn Growers to Pump Discounted E-10 Fuel Friday in Aberdeen, S.D. (8-11-04)

Consumers looking for a reprieve from this summer’s high gasoline prices are invited to top off their tanks with discounted ethanol-blended fuel Friday at the C-Express station at 2303 6th Ave. SE in Aberdeen, S.D. Friday’s event is part of the annual Ethanol Pump Tour, sponsored by the National Corn Growers Association, AgriTalk radio, General Motors and several state corn grower associations.

Mike Adams, host of the nationally syndicated AgriTalk radio program, will join members of the South Dakota Corn Growers Association (SDCGA) and other ethanol advocates to pump E-10 fuel – gasoline containing 10 percent ethanol – from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Adams will also conduct a live remote radio broadcast from the site.

Scott Sperry, an SDCGA member and farmer from Bath, S.D., said fuel will be marked down 30 cents per gallon and promotional items will be handed out. Despite Aberdeen’s rural location, he said many consumers in the area still don’t fully understand the benefits of using ethanol.

“This event is a great way to increase public awareness about ethanol and show people that there’s nothing wrong with using it,” he said. “Lots of people still think ethanol is bad for their cars, and that just isn’t true."

Sperry said consumers who participate in the event not only pay less for their gas, but also learn about ethanol’s many benefits. “Ethanol is better for the environment and better for our country’s economy – it actually makes gas cheaper,” he said.

Over the past decade, South Dakota growers have helped the ethanol industry develop into a viable national energy source and a robust market for corn. The state’s 11 plants have the capacity to produce 422 million gallons annually, or 12 percent of the nation’s ethanol supply. VeraSun Energy Corporation’s 100-million-gallon plant in Aurora, which began production earlier this year, is the latest addition to the state’s booming ethanol industry.

The pump tour makes its final stop Aug. 20 in Pittsburgh, Kan. For more information on the tour, click here.
