NCGA
National Corn Yield Contest is Under Way
(6-3-03)
The 2003 National Corn
Growers Association (NCGA) National Corn Yield Contest (NCYC) is under
way, with the initial deadline for entries set for June 16.
"Contest participants
improve their operations by getting a unique opportunity to compare
their own proven corn production capabilities with farmers in their
state and across the country," said NCGA Interim Director of
Production and Economics, Dr. Robert McIntyre. "The NCYC's goal
is to educate farmers on improving their methods of production to
increase profitability while addressing environmental concerns."
The last five consecutive
years has been the playground of Manchester, Iowa, corn grower Francis
Childs, who won the CYC last year with a record-breaking yield of
442.14 bushels per acre.
In 2002 the contest fielded
more than 3,286 entries from 46 states, topping 2001's total despite
disastrous weather conditions throughout much of the nation. The resulting
top yields from farmers who placed first, second, and third nationally
in the respective categories ranged from 442.14 to 214.86 bushels
per acre.
Winners of this year's
NCYC will be honored at the 2004 Commodity Classic, the combined convention
and trade show of the NCGA and the American Soybean Association (ASA),
March 2-4 in Las Vegas. Along with national recognition, winners receive
prizes from participating seed and crop protection companies.
The entry fee
for the June 15 deadline is $55. Other deadline dates and their entry
fees are: July 1, $65; and Aug. 1, $85. Entry forms are posted on
the NCGA web site at http://www.ncga.com/02profits/CYC/CYCform/entry.html.
