Representatives Meet with DOE Officials
(9-6-01)
Officials from the
National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) met with Deputy Assistant Secretary
for Industrial Technologies at the Department of Energy Denise Swink
and Technical Lead for Agriculture and Biobased Products Mark Paster
Tuesday at the Department of Energy in Washington, D.C.
Representing NCGA
were: CEO and Executive Vice President Rick Tolman; Vice President of
Operations Mike Rohan; and Vice President of Public Policy Bruce Knight.
"The mission
of this group at DOE," said Tolman, "is to provide continued
economic growth, healthy standards of living and strong national security
through the development of plant/crop-based renewable resources that
are a viable alternative to the current dependence on non-renewable,
diminishing fossil fuels."
Ideas discussed
during the meeting included short-term exchanges of staff, joint sponsorship
of a series of energy fairs targeted at sharing recent efficiencies
and technological breakthroughs in ethanol production, as well as an
expansion of efforts to organize an industry advisory panel.
Tolman said NCGA
has had a long-term cooperative relationship with DOE. "We're looking
at opportunities to use corn and corn products to improve U.S. resource
efficiency and fuel flexibility in the industrial sector," he said.
