Urges Growers to Take Advantage of EPA Bt Registration Extension (9-4-01)
The Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) published a formal announcement of an extension
of the comment period on the registration of Bacillus thruingiensis
(Bt) corn and cotton plant-incorporated protectants on its website Sunday.
The new due date is Monday, Sept. 10.
EPA is currently engaged in a comprehensive reassessment of the time-limited
registrations for all existing Bt corn and cotton. The EPA announced
it is allowing until next Monday to comment on the implications of the
revised risk and benefit sections of the reassessment, the draft Potential
Risk Mitigation and Regulatory Options paper, and the Bt Cry1F Corn
Biopesticide Regulatory Action Document (BRAD) for regulatory decisions
affecting the Cry1F and other Bt corn products.
The National Corn
Growers Association (NCGA) encourages growers to contact the EPA and
let them know they support the registration of Bt technology. Bt supporters
can send their letters by clicking on the Action Alert on the NCGA web
site.
