NCGA
Calls on the Senate for Deliberative Action On a Farm Bill (10-24-01)
The National Corn
Growers Association (NCGA)-along with eight other agricultural groups-
is urging the Senate to continue pursuing a deliberative approach in
crafting a new farm bill.
The NCGA and the
other farm groups have advised such an action in a letter to Senate
Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-S.D.)
"In light of
the extraordinary events occurring both at home and around the world,
NCGA agrees with the Administration's contention that the best farm
policy will result not from a hurried process designed to meet an arbitrary
deadline, but from careful, thoughtful consideration," said NCGA
President Tim Hume, a grower from Walsh, Colo. "That's why we suggest
the Senate plan on continuing its work on the farm bill next session,
and set a deadline for completing its work on the farm bill by spring
of 2002."
Earlier statements
by USDA Secretary Ann Veneman and Office of Management and Budget Director
Mitch Daniels indicated that the Bush Administration sought to avoid
an accelerated process in delivering a farm bill because of the ongoing
war on terrorism and divergent views on how to shape farm policy.
