NCGA Calls on House Members
to Vote for TPA Legislation (10-10-01)
The
National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) is pleased with word that,
late last night, the House Ways and Means Committee passed H.R. 3005,
the Bipartisan Trade Promotion Authority Act of 2001 by a vote of 26-13.
This action clears the way for the bill to be brought to the full House
for a vote.
The
NCGA and other ag organizations sent a letter Wednesday to all members
of the House urging support for H.R. 3005. The letter acknowledges the
importance of expanding U.S. exporters' share of world markets, but
notes the need for "stronger international disciplines on trade-distorting
subsidies and improvements in market access."
Even
though exports of U.S. goods have grown under the World Trade Organization
(WTO) Agreement on Agriculture and NAFTA, the letter states: "U.S.
trade negotiators cannot make much more progress, particularly in broad-based
talks in the WTO or Free Trade Agreement of the Americas, without a
bipartisan mandate. H.R. 3005 provides that mandate."
"We
need to keep up the pressure on members of Congress to pass TPA this
year," noted Keira Franz, NCGA director of public policy. "The
time remaining in the legislative session is short, so keep your letters
and phone calls going into your representative's office."
Growers
and other TPA supporters can send letters to their representatives by

call 1-866-PASS-TPA.
