Two Days of Farm Bill Debate
Commences in the House; NCGA Leads the Charge Against Kind Amendment
(10-3-01)
Today,
the House begins two days of debate on the "Farm Security Act"
(H.R. 2646), and dozens of proposed amendments could be offered by members.
However, the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) and other agriculture
groups have lined up solidly against the Kind amendment.
"To
date, corn growers have effectively and assertively voiced their opinions
on this issue, and now is not the time to rest," said NCGA Vice
President of Public Policy Bruce Knight. "NCGA strongly urges all
growers who have not yet contacted their congressmen to do so today.
Every grower should be concerned about the Kind amendment, because it
would divert $20 billion in funding from farm bill commodity programs
over the next 10 years. And it will work to take land out of production."
Knight
noted that these and other aspects of the amendment run contrary to
the voluntary, incentive-based conservation programs that growers have
worked with during previous farm bills.
He
invited growers and other supporters to visit NCGA's website at www.ncga.com
and tap into the Legislative Action Center.
"With
just a few keystrokes, you can send a message to your congressman -
and take pride that you made the effort to shape good public policy
for corn growers everywhere," Knight said, adding that producers
can also contact their congressman's office by calling the U.S. Capitol
switchboard at 202-224-3121.
