Corn Growers Confirm Crop
Quality on Nebraska Harvest Tour (10-03-01)
Randy
Klein, left, of the Nebraska Corn Board, explains the importance of
kernel count to Diane Henry, center, of U.S. Grains Council, and Rick
Tolman, right, CEO of the National Corn Growers Association.
Now in its sixth
year, the Nebraska Corn Board's Harvest Tour samples fields in the state's
major counties and estimates yield, tests for moisture and test weight
and samples for such characteristics as protein and oil. The tour has
been a way to highlight the quality of U.S. corn to international visitors,
who have grown from a single guest from China in1996 to the 56 visitors
from seven countries in 2000. The 2001 tour has no international guests.
"Nebraska is
one of the leading states in corn quality and representative of the
quality throughout the U.S.," Tolman said. "This is a great
opportunity to share this information with our domestic and international
customers. "
The tour participants
sample fields by measuring 1/1000th of an acre, counting ears, picking
the second, sixth and tenth ears, and counting kernels and rows to estimate
yield. The tour continues today.
