NCGA
CEO Discusses Exports, Biotech with Japanese Agriculture Officals(11-02-01)
National Corn Growers
Association (NCGA) CEO and Executive Vice President Rick Tolman was
in Washington, D.C., this week to meet with the Japanese Embassy's Counselor
for Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Masahito Enomoto; and the Japanese
Embassy's First Secretary, Yoishi Watenabe. The meeting in NCGA's Washington,
D.C., office was to get acquainted with NCGA and exchange information.
"They obviously
understand the importance of U.S. corn to Japan," said Tolman.
"They pointed out 95 percent of their corn needs are met by the
U.S. and I expressed to them our appreciation that Japan is our biggest
customer."
Tolman noted the
two visitors were interested in NCGA's stance on farm policy and their
counter-cyclical program. "They were also very interested in our
biotechnology policy," he said. "We gave them copies, in Japanese,
of our biotech policy and I referenced the fact Japan is specifically
listed in that policy on how important they are to us as our number-one
customer."
Over the last six
months, NCGA has met with a wide-range of international visitors, including
ag specialists from Ukraine, France, Korea, Italy, Mexico, Finland and
Venezuela, among others.
