Soundly Defeats Royce Amendment Threatening MAP Funding (7-12-01)
The U.S. House of
Representatives last night defeated - by a vote of 341-85 - an Agriculture
Appropriations amendment that would have eliminated funding for the
Market Access Program (MAP).
The amendment was
offered by Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA). Opposition to the amendment was led
by Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee Chair Henry Bonilla (R-TX)
and Ranking Minority Member Marcy Kaptur (D-OH). Also speaking against
this amendment were Reps. Sam Farr (D-CA), Tom Latham (R-IA) and Allen
Boyd (D-FL).
MAP - administered
by the USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service - helps promote U.S. agricultural
products in key overseas markets. Exports of corn and value-added corn
products have received significant help from MAP.
"The National
Corn Growers Association (NCGA) opposed this amendment and made its
position to Capitol Hill lawmakers," said NCGA's Senior Director
of Public Policy Susan Keith. "We also urged grassroots members
to call their members of Congress to oppose the amendment. We think
MAP is important, and a threat to its funding has been defeated."
