NCGA's
Indiana Leadership Conference Molds Grower Leaders (12-21-01)
Representatives
of the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) journeyed to Indiana
this week at the request of the Indiana Corn Growers Association to
host a leadership seminar focusing on media and presentation training.
The conference, sponsored by Syngenta Crop Protection, was held Tuesday
and Wednesday in Indianapolis.
"The
purpose of the meeting," said NCGA Membership Services Manager
Byron Keelin, "was to help Indiana's new checkoff board, as well
as its assocation, increase membership numbers, increase checkoff awareness
and to get an executive director in place for the checkoff board."
Indiana,
who recently became the 20th corn grower state to implement a checkoff,
is an important state for corn production, Keelin stated.
"NCGA
is excited to see Indiana start a checkoff," he said. "It's
one of the bigger corn-producing states in the nation and the funds
it raises through checkoff will benefit corn growers all over the nation."
During
the two-day seminar, growers were shown tips on how to encourage interaction
between their growers association and the checkoff board, as well as
instruction on media relations and presentation skills.
"I
think the growers really appreciated the information," concluded
Keelin. "With the state checkoff board in its early stages, this
will give them the tools to start off on the right track and have a
successful program."
