Clears the Air on Biotech to French Visitors (8-31-01)
In
its continuing effort to initiate open discussions with other countries
on the issues that affect the nation's corn growers, the National Corn
Growers Association (NCGA) hosted a meeting with representatives from
the French agriculture organization Groupe Euralis in St. Louis.
NCGA
Director of Development Tom Slunecka met with 44 members of the organization,
whose home base is in southwestern France near the Pyrenees Mountains.
Much of the presentation focused on U.S. standards of biotechnology
and the positive effects of biotech both in the U.S. and abroad. After
the presentation, Slunecka answered questions from the audience ranging
from the EU biotech labeling standards to ethanol production.
Slunecka
said the discussions were positive and was pleased with the outcome.
"I think the meeting went well," he said. "They were
very interested in ethanol production and how much cheaper ethanol is
than petroleum products.
"We
also had some great questions on U.S. farm production and exports,"
Slunecka continued. "The nation's corn growers want their customers
to be happy and will do what they can towards that goal."
In
recent months, NCGA has hosted international visitors from Japan, Korea,
Poland, Brazil, Venezuela, Ukraine, Italy and Mexico.
