NCGA President-Elect Attends
Sweetener Symposium, Welcomes NAFTA Ruling on High Fructose Corn Syrup
(8-06-01)
The
National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) welcomes a long-awaited NAFTA
panel ruling that Mexican antidumping duties on U.S.-produced high fructose
corn syrup (HFCS) are illegal. The NAFTA panel gave the Government of
Mexico 90 days to terminate the antidumping order, which has been in
effect since January of 1998.
NCGA
President-Elect and Walsh, Colo. corn grower Tim Hume said the NAFTA
panel made the right decision. "The Mexican government needs to
acknowledge the NAFTA ruling and make the right decision in this matter,"
he said.
"The
U.S. corn refining industry has patiently pursued the appropriate legal
course of action with high regard for our international trade agreements
and dispute settlement processes. NAFTA has told the Mexican government
that their actions are illegal and it is now time for (Mexico) to terminate
the anti-dumping order."
Hume
is currently attending the 18th Annual International Sweetener Symposium
being held in Sun Valley, Idaho. Hume will be meeting with industry
leaders to discuss more food uses of corn and showing leadership in
the sweetener industry.
"We'll
be discussing farm policy as well as going over the status of the sweetener
industry in the U.S. and internationally," said Hume.
The
symposium continues through Wednesday.
