NCGA President-elect Tim Hume Conveys Corn Growers' Support for Trade
Promotion Authority (6-19-01)
President Bush invited
NCGA President-elect Tim Hume (second from left) and other agricultural
leaders for a "call to arms" event kicking off Trade Promotion
Authority (TPA) yesterday. TPA-formerly known as "fast-track authority"-will
enable the United States to negotiate trade agreements in a way that
maximizes benefits for U.S. agricultural exports.
Prior to assembling
on stage in the East Room of the White House, Hume and the other ag
leaders met privately with President Bush. "It was an honor meeting
with the President, knowing the Administration regards NCGA as a leader
in the agricultural producer community," Hume stated.
The Administration's
enthusiasm for world trade is genuine, and it was gratifying to hear
policymakers talk about the barriers faced by U.S. agricultural exports."
Following the President's speech, USDA Secretary Ann Veneman and Trade
Representative Robert Zoellick provided their views on TPA and boosting
export markets.
