AROUND THE CORN BELT
News
from State Associations
Illinois: The Tunisian government recently expanded the 2005 import
quota of corn gluten feed (CGF) by 30,000 metric tons, reports Kurt
Shultz, USGC director in the Mediterranean and Africa. Schultz’s
market building activities are funded in part by Illinois corn checkoff
funds. The original corn gluten import quota of 10,000 tons had been
fully utilized in the first three months of the year by the feed
milling industry, which then began lobbying for an increase in the
quota. Corn gluten imports in excess of the import quota are taxed
with a 73 percent tariff.
Minnesota: According to figures from the Energy Division of the
Minnesota Department of Commerce, in September 2005, E85 retailers
in Minnesota sold more than 1 million gallons in a month for the
first time. To date, Minnesotans have purchased 6.3 million gallons
of E85, which puts Minnesota in position to consume a total of more
than 8 million gallons for 2005, according to Tim Gerlach, director
of outdoor air programs for the American Lung Association of Minnesota.
In 2004, Minnesotans bought 2.6 million gallons. Minnesota is not
the only bright spot for increased E85 sales. The number of E85 retailers
has increased from 250 in 2005, to almost 600 currently. |
