NCGA Applauds Defeat of Grassley-Dorgan Amendment
The NCGA applauds the Senate for defeating the payment limitations amendment offered by Sens. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) and Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) to the FY2006 Budget Reconciliation bill today. The amendment was struck down by a vote of 53-46. Because of the vote, no changes will be made to provisions outlined in the 2002 farm bill for payment limitations or other provisions in the bill, such as considerations related to conservation, nutrition and export programs. The private meeting covered the future of agriculture, the farm bill and trade issues.

News from State Associations

Michigan:The Corn Marketing Program of Michigan (CMPM) and the Michigan Corn Growers Association (MCGA) are accepting request for proposals (RFPs) for their research programs. CMPM and MCGA focus on two areas when evaluating research proposals:

the development of processes adding value to Michigan corn through new markets or advancements in traditional markets, such as the livestock industry and

innovative production techniques and environmentally sound practices that enhance productivity. The specific areas CMPM and MCGA are looking to address through research are: water issues, nitrogen and fertilizer usage, crop rotation, manure management, soil testing, ethanol and its co-products, and development of new uses and markets for corn. South Dakota: Leading experts in financial management, specialty crops, crop insurance and Asian soybean rust will offer their insight at Risk Management Seminars in three South Dakota locations sponsored by the South Dakota Corn Growers Association (SDCGA). Open to all ag producers, the seminars are designed to help producers manage risk and take advantage of profit-generating techniques in their farm or ranch operation. The Risk Management Seminar series kicks off in Pierre, S.D., on Nov. 14 at the Ramkota Hotel. The Risk Management series will also be in Huron on Nov. 15 at the Crossroads Hotel; and the tour will complete in Brookings on Nov. 16 at the Brookings Inn. The schedule for the Risk Management Seminars includes a 7:30 a.m. registration time with the first speaker beginning at 8 a.m. The seminars will adjourn at 4 p.m. each day. The seminars are free and open to the public, but pre-registration is requested. Those individuals who pursue CEU credits will be able to obtain two crop management and four professional development credits by attending one of these seminars.
