AROUND THE CORN BELT
News from State Associations

North Dakota: David Martin, FM Chamber Executive Director, proclaimed Fargo to be the "E85 Capitol of America" and Gov. John Hoeven was presented a plaque by the ND Corn Council recognizing his role in growing the E85 market.  Kent Satrang, manager of the Main Ave Cenex, said last year he sold about 8,000 gallons a month of E85 out of his Fargo and West Fargo Cenex stores. In contrast, September 2005 E85 sales in Satrang’s  Fargo and West Fargo stores totaled a whopping 66,359 gallons – over an 800% increase.  Satrang’s Fargo store carried the bulk of those sales at 41,442 gallons.  In the past three months local consumers have bought over 200,000 gallons of E85 from Satrang’s Fargo area stations.

Illinois: Illinois Commodity Conference is scheduled for Nov. 22, 2005, in Bloomington, Ill. Paul Ellinger, associate professor with the University of Illinois Department of Agricultural & Consumer Economics, will provide a financial analysis of Illinois farms and what it means to growers as planning begins for the 2006 growing season. Another recent addition to the program is Scott Stuart who serves as the president and chief executive officer of the National Livestock Producers Association. Stuart will address the significance of the evolving animal identification issue for Illinois livestock producers.

Minnesota: The Center for Producer-Owned Energy has decided to take an opportunity after harvest this year to stop and take stock of the now-advanced state of renewable energy in Minnesota. They have set Wednesday, Nov. 16 as the date for a daylong conference, to be held at the Holiday Inn, Owatonna, called "Harvesting Ag-Based Power."  "As a result of the success we've had with ethanol, wind power and biodiesel, there are now additional opportunities for co-generation and co-products, like distillers grains from ethanol or glycerin from biodiesel. And, there will be co-products coming along that we have only just started looking at," said Dan Lemke communications director for the Agricultural Utilization Research Institute.
