NCGA Kicks off 2004 Fiscal Year; Dee Vaughan of Texas Moves to the Helm

Today, Oct. 1, marks the beginning of a new fiscal year for the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA), and with the new year comes the potential for new opportunities for the nation’s corn growers.

NCGA Encouraged by Study Indicating Resistance to Bt Toxin is Surprisingly Absent from Pests

NCGA is encouraged by a recent study by USDA-funded scientists indicating insects are not developing resistance to transgenic crops containing Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt).

According to an article published in the September 2003 issue of Nature Biotechnology, findings from the study suggest that transgenic Bt crops could enjoy more extended, more profitable commercial life cycles and that the measures established to mitigate resistance before the crops were introduced are paying off. NCGA’s Vaughan Meets at White House to Discuss Energy Bill

In his second day as president of the NCGA, Dee Vaughan participated today in a roundtable with White House officials to discuss the energy bill.

Vaughan was one of seven representing various industries to discuss their stake in the energy bill with Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham, Chief of Staff Andrew Card and National Economic Council Director Steve Friedman. (More On This Story)

Terri Clark is Sure to ‘Do it All’ as Commodity Classic Entertainer

In her hit single “I Wanna Do It All,” country music entertainer Terri Clark declares: “I wanna do it all, see Niagara Falls, fight city hall, feel good in my skin; Beating the odds with my back to the wall; Tryin’ to rob Peter without payin’ Paul; I wanna do it all…”

The Commodity Classic grower committee is pleased to announce Clark will have the opportunity to “do it all” at the 2004 Commodity Classic, the combined convention and trade show of the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) and the American Soybean Association (ASA), March 2-4 in Las Vegas, Nev. Clark will entertain Thursday evening, March 4, at the Las Vegas Convention Center. (More On This Story)

NCGA Reminds Growers of ‘Know Before You Grow,’ Proper Grain Handling

With harvest well underway in most parts of the country, NCGA is reminding growers of its “Know Before You Grow” program and the importance of ensuring their harvested grain is handled correctly.

“With harvest, many growers are finalizing their plans for storage and handling,” said NCGA Biotech Working Group Chairman and president-elect Leon Corzine. “We all need to take another look and make sure of the products we may be using because some of them may have limited marketability.” (More On This Story)

U.S. Trials of DDGS Ongoing in Taiwan

Feeding trials are under way in Taiwan to show the advantage of using the ethanol co-product Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles (DDGS) in feed rations. “The preliminary results of the feeding trials for broiler and hogs reveal that using DDGS as a protein source in Taiwan’s hot and humid climate is workable,” said C.M. Lynn, the Council’s director in Taipei. University of Minnesota professor Jerry Shurson helped assess the progress of the trials and provided potential importers with information about the utilization of DDGS. Shurson, who has extensively studied DDGS in swine diets, also gave a presentation to feed mill technicians, livestock producers and researchers at the National Chia Yi University on the nutrition and application of high quality DDGS. Shurson visited Korea Sept. 22-23 where he was invited by Je Il Feed Company to conduct a seminar for feed formulation specialists and purchasing managers on new generation DDGS.
