Trade Negotiations Focus on South America, East Asia
The NCGA and other agricultural groups are urging Congress to grant Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) status to Vietnam and to move forward on trade agreements with Colombia and Peru. Congress is scheduled to vote later this month on PNTR status with Vietnam. (More On This Story)

NCGA Urges More Reliable, Affordable Grain Transportation
The NCGA cited much-needed improvements in capacity and the high cost of shipping grains as key transportation problems in comments to the Surface Transportation Board (STB), which is holding a hearing today on the issue of rail transportation of grain. (More On This Story)
UL, DOE Gather E85 Authorization Feedback, Notes NCGA
Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and the U.S. Department of Energy are holding hearings this week to gather more feedback on the development of authorization for E85 equipment, the NCGA notes. The meetings, scheduled for Nov. 1-2 at the UL company headquarters outside of Chicago, will include representatives from oil companies, automakers, researchers and industry stakeholders. NCGA Reacts to RMA Proposal to Crop Insurance Policies
In comments to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Risk Management Agency (RMA), the NCGA noted RMA is taking steps in the right direction in efforts to combine revenue and yield protection but cautioned more adjustments in current premium discounts must be made to reflect corresponding reductions in risk exposure. Illinois: No-till soil conservation practices surpassed conventional tillage for the first time in Illinois. The Soil Erosion and Crop Tillage Transect Survey, conducted by Illinois Soil and Water Conservation Districts and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, shows 33 percent of all 2006 crops were planted in no-till, while conventional tillage was used on 31 percent of cropland. Corn weighed in at 17 percent no-till (22 percent reduced till), up two percentage points.
Kansas: Corn, wheat, grain sorghum and cotton producers will gather in Salina on Nov. 14 at the Kansas Commodity Classic. The event will begin at 9 a.m. at the Salina Holiday Inn. NCGA President Ken McCauley of White Cloud will be featured on a panel discussion of the upcoming farm bill discussions. This program is free to growers, and membership in an association is not required.
Michigan: The Corn Marketing Program of Michigan (CMPM) is accepting research requests for proposals to advance Michigan’s corn industry. Specific areas CMPM is looking to address are: pest management strategies for Western bean cutworm, Northern leaf blight, and corn rootworm; butanol; use of dried distillers grains and carbon dioxide; increasing ethanol production efficiency through alternative uses for ethanol coproducts and other areas; consumer research on ethanol and corn-based products for use in marketing and education. Minnesota: Dale Busch has received the distinguished service award from Watonwan County Farm Bureau. Since 2001, Busch has worked as a regional representative for the Minnesota Corn Growers Association for the state's south central counties.
Missouri: Missouri Corn Growers Association (MCGA) and Missouri Corn Merchandising Council (MCMC) CEO Gary Marshall was presented with the Honorary American FFA Degree at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Ind.
Nebraska: Local corn grower associations will send delegates to voice their opinions on farm bill options at the Nebraska Corn Growers Association Annual Meeting to be held on Dec. 13 at the Kearney Holiday Inn from 8 a.m.–11:30 a.m. in conjunction with the Nebraska Ag Classic conference.
