AROUND THE CORN BELT
News from State Associations

Illinois: Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich announced more than $25 million in new Opportunity Returns grants and additional support to help build five new ethanol and biodiesel production facilities across Illinois. The new plants will spur about $334 million in private investment, produce 225 million gallons of biofuels each year, create almost 150 new jobs and reduce Illinois’ dependence on foreign oil.

Iowa: Iowa Corn, Iowa Speedway, and the Indy Racing League announced that Iowa Corn Promotion Board will be the title sponsor for the Iowa Corn Indy 250 at the new Iowa Speedway in Newton, Iowa, June 24, 2007.

Nebraska: The Nebraska Corn Board is teaming up with Furst-McNess to assist cattle producers in providing distillers grains in a cube form. The Nebraska Corn Board will be providing a $500 grant that will be matched by Furst-McNess to introduce the new cube product to cattle producers in the Chadron area due to the recent fires that have displaced cattle. The fires that rapidly burned approximately 70,000 acres have affected several ranchers and thousands of cattle.

Minnesota: Sen. Norm Coleman (R-Minn.) took testimony from three farmers and an agribusiness representative in Worthington, in order to hear first hand how constituents see the current farm program, which is due to be reconsidered in 2007. Rodney Moe, a farmer in Waltham who serves as president of Minnesota Corn Growers Association, said it was gratifying to hear directly from the senator once again that he supports an extension of the current farm bill. Coleman, however, cautioned his audience that the fiscal situation in Washington would likely mean cuts to the program. He said that even with those cuts he would try to maintain the essence of the safety net and revenue assurance that the farm bill provides.
