DDGS New Market Research
Nearly 5 million tons of DDGS are currently created in domestic dry grind ethanol production; locally owned cooperatives represent 48% of that production. For every bushel of corn made into ethanol, 18 pounds of DDGS are created and must maintain value to contribute to plant profitability.

Solubles Project—Development of higher value use of distillers solubles. The goal of this research is to develop protein blocks, utilizing high proportions of distillers solubles, through a low-moisture pressure process, and to evaluate these blocks as a free-choice supplement for growing cattle.

Nisin Project—Development of Process to Create Nisin from distillers solubles
This projectpresents a new opportunity for the alternative use of DDGS, especially condensed distiller solubles (CDS) which is enriched in water soluble nutrients necessary for bacteria growth. Distiller solubles from bio-ethanol production and whey from cheese manufacturing, two underutilized by-products, will be used in the proposed concept as substrates for the simultaneous production of nisin and lactic acid.
