Share the Facts on Sustainability & Stewardship

Soil erosion, hypoxia, conservation. Much has been written on these topics with little understanding of how farming practices impact these issues. Farmers, whose livelihoods depend on the ground they toil, know beneficial stewardship practices are vital to keeping the business in the family for generations to come, as well as to meet the growing global demand for food.
Technology advancements—in corn hybrids, tillage practices and equipment—have had a tremendous impact on U.S. growers’ ability to provide food, fuel, feed and fiber and use fewer acres to produce more. Looking back to 1931, corn producers planted more than 109 million acres. In 2007 that number was 93 million acres. Yet per acre production has soared. In 1931, corn growers produced 2.2 billion bushels of corn; and in 2006 (the latest figures available), they produced 10.5 billion bushels—or 372 percent more than in 1931!
These tremendous accomplishments have not occurred without a great respect for the land, yet public understanding of crop production remains minimal. Share your remarkable story with media and broaden the public’s understanding of this remarkable crop.
