Corn
remains the most versatile crop in the United States and the world.
From feed for livestock, to corn chips for your kids,to fuel for
your automobile, to the manufacturing of plastics, corn touches
everyone. And every year new uses are developed that promise to
diversify the World of Consumption even more. In 2001, the World
of Corn consumed nearly 9.9 billion bushels of corn produced in
the United States. While nearly 60 percent of that corn was consumed
by hogs, beef cattle, chickens and other animals that make up the
U.S. livestock industry, new uses will continue to drive consumption
in the future. For example, consumption by the ethanol market grew
to 7 percent of the United States' total production in 2001, a market
that was nearly nonexistent just 15 years ago. That's just the tip
of the iceberg. New technology in development promises to lead to
even more diversity of use for corn in the future. Corn: it truly
is the world's most versatile Crop.
