High Oil Corn Model

Information about oil content

When growing high oil corn using the TopCross® system the seed planted will be a blend of female grain parent and male pollinator. The pollen from the male pollinator carries the high oil trait.

Thus, it is important for maximum oil content that cross-pollination does not occur by pollen from regular hybrids.

Oil content is not a single figure and varies depending on the TC Blend® seed lines and with growing conditions. This is true for regular corn as well as for high oil corn. The typical mean values used are around 3.8% for regular corn and 7.5% for high oil corn. This high oil value may vary from 6.5% to 8.5% oil.

For any particular TC Blend® seed, the seed company should be able to indicate the average expectations for oil content. Since, the high oil trait is valuable then the content is measured for purposes of determining the extra value. By using this information, over time, it will be possible to compare individual farm results with expectations. It will also be possible to compare the results from individual seed companies, and for particular practices.

The values for oil are often on a dry weight basis (dry wt basis is used throughout this web site). However, grain oil content may be measured at moisture contents other than zero. The conversion for some other levels is given in the table:
